1.Course Offered: B.Sc (Chemistry) (Aided Course)
2. History of the Department:
The B.Sc., (Chemistry) major programme was started during 1979 with Maths / Botany and Physics as Ancillary subjects. The Department has been producing exemplary results right from its inception. The Department is constantly concentrating on the overall development of students. So far 24 batches of students have successfully finished their graduation. Many students have joined prestigeous institution like M.I.T, I.I.Sc, I.I.T for their higher studies and have been well placed.
The objective of the course is to equip the students well with both theoretical and practical knowledge as per the curriculum. When a student join this course, her / his level of knowledge & self-confidence is generally very low. The department staff encourages the student in such a way that when they leave after 3 years, they become highly responsible citizens, with adequate knowledge and self-confidence so that they can face their future with courage and strong will. A major area of interest is, the students are well trained in the theoretical aspects of experiments. Hence when they face interviews conducted by Quality Control at Production industries, they perform well and get placed in such industries.
4. Eligibility for admission:
Candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations of the Government of Tamilnadu with Science subjects or equivalent examinations recognized by the Syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University.
5. Duration of the Course
The duration of the course shall be three academic years comprising six semesters with two semesters in each academic year.
6. Course Content
The course contains important subjects such as Theoretical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Application of Computer in Chemistry. In addition it contains Ancillary papers in Physics and Maths/Botany.

Dr. C.R.Yuvarajan is the Head of the Department which has four faculties (1+4). Two vacancy is yet to be filled. Two members are doctorates. Three members are M.Phil. qualified. This department is offering B.Sc. Chemistry.
Higher secondary examination pass is the requisite qualification for entry into all undergraduate courses. 75% of male students and 25% of female students get enrolled in course. Students from local and neighbouring areas (in and around Madurai) join in our course
There is a small department library which is useful for lending purpose. The Department has two computers along with a printer. The laboratory is well equipped with modern facilities for usage of the students.
All the teachers participated in state level and national conferences and presented papers. The Department is regularly conducting guest lecturers through the Chemistry Association.
Two faculty members Dr.C.R.Yuvarajan and Dr.V.Sathiyendran have published four research papers in their area of research during 2006-2011.
Students are assessed through internal tests, assignments, seminars, quiz programmes and the class tests are also conducted periodically for the students.
Placement Cell of the college gives all the notices and brochures to the department for circulation among the students. Guest lectures and Seminars conducted by the Department motivate the students to prepare for competitive examinations and face the interview.
K.V.Hariharan and N.M.Arunbabu of III year chemistry have won consolation prizes for having presented a paper titled “The Impact of Chemical Industries on Climate Change” in the state level students seminar conducted at Thiagarajar College, Madurai on 21.09.2011
More than 25 students have participated in NSS and 10 students joined in NCC and other activities. Students also participate in the Chemistry Association activities.
The Department has planned to conduct National level seminar and to apply for Minor research project.
