Department of Mathematics
1. Course Offered: B.Sc(Maths) & M.Sc(Maths)
2. History of the Department:
The B.Sc degree course was started in the year June 1975 in Sourashtra College, Madurai and upgraded as a PG department in August 1986.
3. Eligibility for Admission:
The candidate should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Board of Government of Tamil Nadu with Mathematics and Physics as compulsory subjects.
4. Duration of the Course:
The duration of the course for B.Sc(Maths) is three academic years comprising six semesters with two semesters in each academic year.
5. Medium of Instruction: English
6. Subjects to Study:
Part I : Tamil/Hindi/Sanskrit 4 semesters
Part II : English 4 semesters
Part III : Major – Theory Papers
- Four compulsory computer paper namely C Theory, C++, Ms-Office and Foxpro. (Papers for B.Sc Third Year)
- Calculus, Analytical Geometry of 3 Dimension, Theory of Equations, Modern Algebra, Analysis, Operations Research, Numerical Methods.
- Ancillary Physics for I year & II year B.Sc(Maths)
- Two computer practical papers in fifth and sixth semesters.
- Ancillary Physics practical for I year & II year in the even semesters.
7. Eligibility for Admission:
The candidate should have passed B.Sc degree in Mathematics with a minimum of 35% in the major subject will be eligible for M.Sc(Maths)
8. Duration of the Course:
The duration of the course for M.Sc(Maths) is two academic year ( four semesters).
9. Medium of Instruction: English
10. Subjects of Study:
Theory: Algebra, Analysis, (Real And Complex) ,Operations Research , Numerical Analysis, Statistics.
Practical: Two compulsory practical papers for M.Sc(Maths).
Numerical Methods for Second Semester and Methods of Operations Research for Fourth Semester.

Prof. N.S. Ravindran is the Head of the Department. The Department has been sanctioned with ten faculties (1+9). One of the staff members is pursuing Ph.D. All the members of the department are M.Phil. qualified.
Most of the students come from economically poor status family and from tamil medium. 70% of male students and 30% of female students get enrolled in course. Students from local and neighbouring areas (in and around Madurai) join in our course.
There is a small department library with 1500 books which are useful for lending purpose.
Every teacher is engaged in counselling of students. According to the college system, every teacher has to look after 20 students in each class. Student records are maintained. The internal marks and external marks are entered. The students who are irregular in attendance are asked to bring their parents and meet the teachers.
Prof. K.N. Ganesh Babu, Prof. M.K.Eswarlal and Prof. G.R.Shyamala have attended the Orientation and Refresher course programmes held at Academic staff college in Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.
All the teachers participated in state level and national conferences and presented papers. The Department is regularly conducting guest lecturers through Ramanujam Mathematics Association.
Prof. N.H. Saravanan has prepared the study material for Mathematics for distance education course of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai
Staff and students of the department extended their activities to Karunai Illam run by Thirupparankundram temple to help the orphanage children by providing school uniform and stationery items to them. One staff member is acting as NSS Co-ordinator.
Placement Cell of the college gives all the notices and brochures to the department for circulation among the students. Guest lectures and Seminars conducted by the Department motivate the students to prepare for competitive examinations and face the interview.
Students participate in the Ramanujan Mathematics Association of the department.
Planned to conduct National level seminar. To apply for Minor research project. To visit orphanage home regularly and help the poor and needy.
