Department of Physics
B.Sc (Physics) (Aided course)
History of the Department:
The Department of Physics was started in the year 1967. Pre-University course was introduced in the college for the students who studied Physics as Ancillary subject. There were tutors and demonstrators for teaching the theory and practical. Later on the department was upgraded with B.Sc (Physics) Major course in the year 1980 in the college. Since then the department has been offering the course to cater the needs of the science and engineering sectors. The department has adequate number of class rooms, staff room and a well equipped laboratory to accommodate nearly 100 number of major students and 132 number of ancillary students. So far 24 batches of students have successfully finished their graduation. Many students have joined prestigious institutioins like M.I.T, I.I.T., I.I.Sc for their higher studies.
The objective of this course is to make the students well skilled, aware of the latest trend in science and technology. Students can pursue higher studies and research in the area of popular fields in physics. Because most of the students hail from economically poor strata of the society. Students from local and eighbouring areas (in and around Madurai) join in this course.
Eligibility for admission:
Candidates seeking admission to the B.Sc Physics course must have passed the higher secondary examination (I Group and II Group) conducted by the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Board or any other equivalent examination approved by the Syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University.
Duration of the Course:
The duration of the course shall be three academic years comprising of six semesters with two semesters in each academic year.
Medium of Instruction:
The medium of instruction is English.
The B.Sc., Physics course consists of 33 papers. It includes all the core, skill, ancillary and practical papers. Some important papers are Mechanics and properties of matter, Thermal Physics, Energy Physics, Solid State Physics, Classical and Quantum mechanics, Bio Physics and Laser and spectroscopy etc.,
General Practical and Electronic practical (both analog and digital) are the important practical for major students and mechanics, heat, light and sound practical are the ancillary related one.

Profile of the department:
Captain T.K.VishnuRam is the Head of the Department. He is also acting as the NCC Officer. The department has been sanctioned with seven faculties (1+6). Among them two vacancies are yet to be filled. Prof A.K.Balasubramanian is a doctorate. Four members of the department are M.Phil degree holders. After introduction of the autonomous system in the college, the syllabus has been revised this year. There is a small department library which is useful for lending purpose. The department has two computers along with the printer. The Laboratory is well equipped with modern equipments like CRO, VTVM, Digital Multimeter and Ultrasonic equipments for use of the students.
Recently a LCD projector has been purchased from UGC Grant and installed in the laboratory to make it as a smart Lab. Books are added every year to the department library for the students and staff. Every teacher is engaged in counseling of students. According to the college system, every teacher has to look after 20 students in each class. Student records are maintained. The internal marks and external marks are entered. Head of the department is acting as the convener of Service Entry Coaching Cell. All the teachers are participating in the seminars, conferences, workshop conducted by other colleges and Universities with the National and State level funding agencies.
The department is arranging guest lectures through Bhabha Physics Association in each and every semester. This helps the students to prepare themselves for the interview and other competitive examinations. One of the faculties Dr.A.K.Balasubramanian has published five research papers in the international journals during 2006-2009 and he was awarded Ph.D degree in the year 2009. Students also take part in the activities of NSS and NCC programmes.
