Department of Commerce and Research Centre in Commerce
The Department of Commerce is an active and vibrant Department with a good track record for the past 45 years. The Department of Commerce is recognised by the Madurai Kamaraj University as a Research Centre for pursuing Ph.D., programme in Commerce. Besides, the Department offers M.Phil., M.Com., B.Com., B.Com (Computer Applications) programmes.

The Sourashtra College is a people-centred institution that serves the needs of its diverse communities by contributing to the sustainable development through excellent academic programmes, research and service delivery.
Sourashtra College offers B.Com since 1972. The Department admits around 140 students, both boys and girls in two sections for the UG Programme every year. The Commerce Department has been recognised by the UGC to offer vocational stream courses in B.Com. In fact, it is one among the few selected colleges by the UGC to offer Vocational Stream in B.Com.
Those who have passed H.S.C. (XII std.) or any other equivalent examination as recognised by the Madurai Kamaraj University
The Department has been recognised to offer Vocational Stream in B.Com during the IX Plan period and as a result the Department offers now B.Com – Computer Application.
During the X Plan period, the UGC has selected the Department for offering Career Oriented Programmes at the First Degree Level. From the year 2005-06 onwards, the Department offers the following Add-On Courses as Career Oriented Programmes at the First Degree Level:
Master of Commerce Degree Programme was started in 1981-82 under semester system. In this course 72 (36+36) is the sanctioned strength. A candidate who has passed any one of the degrees namely B.Com., B.Com (CA), B.Com (Corporate Secretaryship), B.B.A, B.B.M., B.A.(Cooperation), B.A (Business Economics), B.A (Industrial Organisation), B.Sc (Mathematics with Accountancy, and costing or Banking as allied) ancillary subjects, B.Sc (Computer Science with accounting / costing as allied) ancillary subject.
This course offers 20 subjects including Business Environment, Management Concepts, Banking Technology, Information Technology, Customer Relationship Management, Overseas Marketing, Resource Management Techniques, Taxation and Accountancy papers. This department offers ‘Tourism Management’ course under NME to PG students from other streams.
Master of Philosophy in commerce is the one year research programme offered under semester patterns under autonomy. This course offers papers namely Research Methods in Commerce, Advanced Financial Management and Human Resource Management in the I semester and a dissertation is to be submitted by each student in the II semester and each should appear for a public viva-voce exam. It was started in 2003-04. Since its inception, 60 scholars have qualified for M.Phil Degree from this research centre. At present, 10 scholars are admitted in M.Phil during 2012-2013.
This department is recognised as an approved research centre in commerce by the Madurai Kamaraj University. The research centre status was obtained from Madurai Kamaraj University from 2005. There are four recognised Ph.D guides who are supervising research scholars. Upto 2012, 8 doctorates were produced by this department. 13 scholars have submitted their Ph.D thesis and 12 Scholars are doing research.
This department offers two certificate courses for the students namely ‘Supply Chain Management’ and “Tourism and Travels Management”. It provides papers namely i) Supply Chain Management, ii) Logistics Management, iii) Principles of Tourism and iv) Tourism and Travels Management. A total number of 120 students are studying this programme. This is coming under add-on course for the benefit of students to have good exposure in the field for their future career.

The Add-on courses are offered at three levels viz., Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. The Department is well equipped with infrastructure, both human resources as well as other physical resources like Internet Connectivity and other necessary Computer Software related to the above mentioned Add-On courses.
In addition to the UGC sponsored courses, the department offers some need based courses depending upon the requirement of the environment. From 2005-06 the Department offers Computerised Accounting Package-Tally. The course is designed and examination is conducted by the College and the certificates are issued on the aegis of Sourashtra College.
Dr. R.L. Ramnath, the Principal of the College, is the Head of the Department. This is a research department having strength of 13 staff members. Six are doctorates and one has submitted Ph.D. dissertation and another one is pursuing Ph.D. Five faculty members are qualified with M.Phil. and M.B.A. So for this department has produced eight doctorates. Two part-time lawyers and four management staff are working in the department.
Studentsjoining in B.Com and M.Com courses belong to average scoring of qualified examinations. 66% of male students and 34% of female students get enrolled in course. Students from local and neighbouring areas (in and around Madurai) join in our course.
The department has a separate library with 3200 books for M.Com, M.Phil and Ph.D students. Students make use of the books and journals. There are 53 computers with Internet facilities provided for commerce students.
A smart class room is provided for the students to take seminar and for guest lectures. The department has three computers for the above said purpose. There is a separate reading room in the department library for PG students. The department has added text books to the general library and department library.
LCD projector facility is available with the department which is used for guest lectures and taking seminar classes. Audio system is installed in the classes for effective teaching.
Dr.R.L.Ramnath, Head and Dr.K.Jeyachandran Presented a paper in the International Conference at Kulalumpur during November 2012.
The Role of Finance, Entrepreneurship, Consumer’s Awareness, Small Scale Industries, Insurance and Banking etc. are the priority area of research.
Dr.L.P.Ramalingam is doing a UGC minor project on “Rural Consumers Awareness about ISI Mark on White Goods”.
Dr.R.L.Ramnath, Dr.V.Gopathy, Dr.M.Muthupandi, Dr.K. Jeyachandran, and Dr. L.P. Ramalingam have produced publications. Dr. M.Muthupandi has published 10 books and Dr. L.P. Ramalingam has published 5 books through the reputed publication.
Dr.J.Duraichamy is acting as NSS programme officer. The teachers and students take part in social extension activities regularly.
The department has produced 8 Ph.Ds., and 10 M.Phil., Degrees. Moreover the department has got PG grant for the benefit of students and staff.
The department conduct meetings, seminars and guest lectures on behalf of the Commerce Association and PRISM.
The department has conducted the coaching classes for NET/SLET examinations. The certificate courses for tourism, supply chain management, Export and import documentation are being conducted every year for UG students.
