Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology
1. Courses Offered:
The Department offers UG Biochemistry & PG Biotechnology, One certificate Course in Biotechnology & Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology
2. History of the Department:
The B.Sc Biochemistry programme was started in the Year 1993 and the Post Graduation in Biochemistry in 1996 and has produced a number of postgraduates who are well placed in various fields. Another arm was added to the Department in the form of a UGC sponsored course in Biotechnology, in 2002. The department has started Post Graduation in Biotechnology in 2005.
The Department has undertaken various project works sponsored by funding agencies in various aspects of Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
To introduce Job Oriented Courses in the succeeding years keeping in mind the need of the times.
4. Eligibility for Admission:
Candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations of the Governtment of Tamilnadu with Physics, Chemistry & Biology or Vocational (Agri, Nursing) subjects or equivalent examinations recognized by the syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University.
Candidates must have passed the Undergraduate degree programme in any one of the subjects of Life Sciences or equivalent examinations recognized by the syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University.
5.Duration of the Course:
The Duration of the course is three academic years comprsing 6 semesters with two semesters in each academic year.

6. Course Content:
The Course contains important lab cum theory subjects such as Biochemical techniques, Enzymology, Immunotechnology, Genetic Engineering, and Food Processing Technology with Chemistry & Biology as allied subjects & NME subjects.
The Course comprises important lab cum theory subjects such as Molecular Genetics, Bioinformatics, Molecular & Developmental Biology, Biophysics & Structural Biology, Enzyme technology, Plant & Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, rDNA technology, Genomics & Proteomics, Immuno & Nanotechnology, Animal Biotechnology & StemCell Technology and Microbial & Environmental Biotechnology with NME Subjects.
- 7. Learning Resources:
The department has a well equipped library with books and journals of well-known authors and renowned publishing houses. The goal is to provide ample resources on the campus so that they can be supplemented with additional information other than their course work. The library is stocked with more than 1,500 books.
We have computer facilities with internet access for the students to this helps the students to get further details of the latest technologies and information about the subjects.
Laboratories and other resources
The Department is committed to give extensive hands-on-experience with modern Instrumentation and Computation which will provide problem solving skills. Major instrumentations like Fluorescent & Inverted, Water Bath Shaker, Ovens – Hot Air & Microwave, Tissue Homogenizer, Deep Freezers (-20oC & 80oC), Incubators – CO2 & BOD, Spectrophotometer, Chromatograph, Electrophoresis – SDS – PAGE & Agarose Gel, High Speed Centrifuges – Cooling & Micro centrifuge, PCR – Thermal Cycler, Lyophilizer, Laminar Air Flow Chamber – Horizontal & Vertical, Fermenter, Gel Documentation Unit, UV Transilluminator are employed in laboratory and project works throughout curriculum. We have Separate Laboratories for Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Cell Culture, Cold room (Protein work) and Bioinformatics.
Faculty use modern technologies like Over Head Projector, Power point and Liquid Crystal Display presentations as visuals during their lectures. Discussions take up at the end of the lessons. The department also focuses on conducting guest lectures, conferences, seminars and workshops by eminent personalities from various fields to brainstorm on various issues and help to expand the students perspective and knowledge of the working world.

- 8. Faculty Profile:
Dr. B. Anand Kumar is the Head of the Department (Biotechnology) and Ms. N.B. Sharmila is the Head of the Department (Biochemistry) along with 6 faculty members to handle the UG and PG classes. One of the members is awarded Ph.D degree and 6 members are M.Phil qualified.
Dr. B. Anand Kumar has published 8 research papers in his area of research.
Staff members have participated International/National/State level Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and other programmes.
- 9. Collaboration with other departments/institutions at the National level:
The Departement has MoU with Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, (Laboratories and Educational Institutions), Corrosion Science and Technology Division of Indira Gandhi Centre for tomic Research, Kalpakkam and Spirulina production research and training centre(A Unit of Antenna Trust), Madurai.
10.National / State level Seminars held:
One UGC Sponsored National level Seminar and 3 State level Seminars were conducted by the department.
Students have participated in various Seminars, inter-collegiate competitions and other programmes and won many prizes.
A total of 15 Students has been awarded University ranks.
Two Students had carried out TNSCST projects.
High success rate of completion of their degrees by the Students.
- The department conducts annual intercollegiate meet every year to promote awareness and bringing out the talent hidden among the Students.
- The department conducts Workshops to give hands-on training to the Student community from various Colleges.
Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology
The present students admitted in U.G. course have come from tamil medium. 70% of male students and 30% of female students get enrolled in our course. Students from local and neighbouring areas (in and around Madurai) join in our course. The average results for the past five years are 84.6% for UG course and 82.75% for PG course. There is no dropout rate.
Faculty uses modern technologies like OHP, PowerPoint and LCD presentations as visual modes during their lectures.
The department provides counselling for the students to make themselves ready to adapt and adopt global working environment.
The staff of the department are motivated to participate in consultancy programmes like conducting M.Phil projects & Workshops for other colleges and universities. By these programmes, small revenue is generated for the college. The scholarship is granted to needy students through BIM club.
Four faculty members have published 8 research papers in the reputed journals.
The department has conducted inter school competition to the students of higher secondary schools in Madurai district to create awareness on life sciences.
Students are assessed through internal tests, assignments, seminars, quiz programmes and the class tests are also conducted periodically for the students.
Placement Cell of the college gives all the notices and brochures to the department for circulation among the students. The Department library provides books related to competitive examinations and face the interview for the students.
Three students got university rank in Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.
Students are participating in the Biology Association activities like conducting seminars, workshop, giving psyotheraphy treatment to public and tree plantation program in our college campus.
The Department has planned to initiate to get new MoUs and to introduce M.Phil course.
The Department has to conduct National Workshop and Seminars.
