2.History of the Department
The Department of M.Sc. (CS & IT) is one of the dynamic department in the Sourashtra College. The department was established in 2001.The Department has adequate teaching staff and they are competent and highly motivated. The staff members are well qualified to teach the emerging trends in the field of Computer Science.
- The objective of the course is to equip the students To work in a challenging environment in IT industry.
- The Department mostly caters to the needs of the economically backward and rural students.
- The department staff encourages the students in such a way that when they complete their course, they become responsible person, with adequate knowledge of skill and computer and self confidence.
4.Elgibility for admission
Students should have passed UG in any discipline (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Commerce, English, Tamil, Biology etc.,) with minimum 55% of marks and maths as compulsory in +2 level. They can join in this course M.Sc (CS & IT).
5. Curriculum of the course
The duration of the course shall be two academic years. Two semester in each academic year.
The curriculum is being updated regularly. CBCS, non major electives and NME subjects to other department are highlights.
Mr.P.RAMESH M.C.A.,M.E.,M.PhIL., is the Head of the Department which has four faculty members The teaching staff members are having vast teaching and research experience and encourage the students to meet the challenges in the IT field. Our staff members have attended and presented papers in various conferences.
7. Course content
The course contains subjects as Data structures and algorithm ,Operating system, system analysis and design, Graphics and multimediaComputer networks software Engineering Software project managementInternet and web designing.,soft skill
The students are given with proper study materials and question banks. The teaching staff members handling extra coaching classes for poor performing students. The tests are conducted weekly and monthly basis.
The Department has a very good library with collection 6,902 books. This includes e-books, national and international journals. The students are advised to use library effectively for preparing assignments, seminars etc., Every week two hours are being allotted for news paper reading by students of all classes.
The Computer Lab is well equipped with 90 computers with 4 servers. The students are having computer lab session daily with duration of 2 hours.
The lab has modern gadgets like Internet wi-fi connection printers, mounted projectors etc.,
The teaching staff members are encouraged to take classes through LCD projectors and multimedia projectors. Through Multimedia presentation students can enjoy learning through sound and picture and can gain more things than reading a book.
The Department is having MOU with Zeal Soft Technologies, STAR TECHNOLOGIES, MSoft GP , NCCT for soft skill training and placement. The Department is conducting basic computer courses like “Fundamentals of Computers and its applications” to the non computer major students.
As part of the social obligation, the Department conducted two days basic computer knowledge training in nearby Nilayur School which consists of rural and backward students. In addition to that the Department has contributed in various social activities. Our alumini students have contributed donations and participated in pongal festival with boys of “BALAR ILLAM” Nagamalai pudukottai.

Prof. J.R. Nathan M.C.A.,M.Phil., is acting as the head of the department along with two staff members. They are qualified with M.Phil., Asst. Prof. S. Jothilakshmi is about to submit her Ph.D.,. One vacancy is yet to be filled up. This department is offering M.Sc Computer Science and M.Sc Computer Science and Information Technology separately.
Since the socioeconomic status is low, many students are doing part-time job. 50% of male students and 50% of female students get enrolled in course. Students from local and neighbouring areas (in and around Madurai) join in our course.
After introduction of autonomous system in our college, the syllabus was revised this year.
The average result for the past five years is 77.4% The dropout rate is less than 2%.
Books are added to the general and department libraries every year and the subjects are taught through LCD projector.
We give multimedia presentation to the students to learn through sound, picture and gain more things.
They provide the counselling to the students.
Our department staff members are regularly participating in seminars and conferences and presenting papers.
An MOU has been made with Zeal soft Technologies for soft skill training and placement. Certificate course was conducted to art students like B.Com.(C.S) about “Fundamentals of Computers and its Applications”
The department has conducted a seminar on computer course for the middle school students at Nilaiyur.
Students are assessed through internal tests, assignments, seminars, quiz programmes and the class tests are also conducted periodically for the students.
Placement Cell of the college gives all the notices and brochures to the department for circulation among the students. Guest lectures and Seminars conducted by the Department motivate the students to prepare for competitive examinations.
The faculty members participate in International, National level seminars. Students have participated in various technical seminars, cultural events and symposiums in various colleges in and outside Tamil Nadu.
The department has organized a National level seminar on open source Technologies in tie up with IIT-Bombay.
Making the students to get 100% result and placement, Real time projects will be entertained and industrial visits are arranged to students to learn about the current trend of Information Technology.
All faculties including head of the Department has registered for Ph.D. More members are motivated to register their Ph.Ds
