2 History of the Department:
The M.Sc., Physics course was started in the year 2003. Since then the Department has produced around (7 batches) P.G. Physics graduates who are well paced in the India and Abroad.. The Department has been successfully functioning with a well equipped Physics Laboratory, and a Department Library. The Department has adequate number of rooms to accommodate 26 students and 5 faculty members.
To prepare the well-versed so that they can manage Optical and Electronics equipment sources to enter into research field or teaching faculty
4. Eligibility for admission:
Candidates should have passed the B.Sc., Physics course affiliated by MKU or any other university accepted by the syndicate as equivalent there in with Major subject Physics and Mathematics and Chemistry as ancillary subjects.
The students shall undergo the prescribed course of the study for a period of two year (four semester)

7. Course Content:
The M.Sc., Physics syllabus has been updated every three years by the Board of studies for M.Sc., Physics of Madurai Kamaraj University. After obtaining autonomous status the syllabus is framed by the board of studies with HOD as the Chairman, all the teaching staff as members, with two experts from other colleges, one Madurai Kamaraj University nominee and one Alumini of the department. At present there are 12 Major theory paper, 2 Major Elective papers , 1 Non Major Elective paper, 4 Major Practical Papers, and one Major Project paper.
Major Theory Papers:
Mathematical Paper-I, Classical Mechanics, Applied Electronics, Major Elective: Computer oriented Numerical Method, Mathematical Physics – II, Electromagnetic theory, Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamic, Major Elective: Nano Physics, Condensed Matter Physics –I , Quantum Mechanics, Gaussian & Fourier Optics and Laser Physics, Non Major Elective: E-Commerce, Condensed Matter Physics – II, Communication Physics, Nuclear Physics & spectroscopy etc.,
Major Practical Papers:
Practical : – I – Electronics, II – General Physics , III – Electronics ,IV – General Physics etc.,

Prof. M. Krishnan is acting as the HOD which has four members. They are qualified with M.Sc., and M.Phil degrees. Since the socioeconomic status is low, many students are doing part-time job. 65% of male students and 35% of female students get enrolled in our course. Students from local and neighbouring areas ( in and around Madurai) join in our course.
Department has a separate library with adequate number of text books, reference books and journals. It also has three computers and well equipped labouratory. Department has a sound system presented by 2009 – 2010 batch of M.Sc., Physics students.
The laboratory has been updated with the apparatus like electromagnet, laser light, amplifier, loud speakers etc., Department is using OHP and LCD projector to conduct seminars and guest lecturers.
The staff members are helping SSLC and Higher secondary students of various schools by way of giving training and demostration about the laboratory instruments and practical experiments.
Students of second year M.Sc., Physis of Rama Praba College of Arts and Science have been permitted to make used of the laboratory.
Two faculty of the department have published papers in the journals.
A visit to old age home and orphanage is made. Eye donation awareness day, Christmas, Pongal, Navarathi festivals are conducted in the college campus and visited to the laboratory, Gandhigram Rural University, Dindigul, regularly.
Students are assessed through internals tests, assignments, seminars, quiz programmes and the class test are also conducted periodically for the students.
Placement Cell of the college give all the notices and brochures to the department for circulation among the students. Guest lectures and Seminar conducted by the Department motivate the students to prepare for competitive examinations.
The students participate in the physics association activities of the department and the seminar, workshop conducted in various other colleges.
Every semester parent-teacher meeting is conducted in the department to inform about the student performance.
Applied Medical Physics paper and Certificate course in Medical Physics, Astrophysics as optional paper in consulation with retired ISRO Scientist Mr. Sivasubramaniam and ISRO Scientist Dr.T.K. RamKumar are to be introduced in the near future.
